The Milwaukee Solvay Coke Company was incorporated in 1902 as the Milwaukee Coke and Gas Company by the Schlesinger Interests. In 1905 the company constructed a plant and supplied gas to the Milwaukee Gas Light Company. In the 1920s Milwaukee Coke and Gas was acquired by the Koppers Company, a coke manufacturing conglomerate. The original Koppers Company was founded by Dr. Heinrich Koppers, a young German engineer who developed a new type of coke oven that could economically recover the byproduct chemicals of the coal-cooking process.
